Fantastic Henry leads Arsenal victory over Real Madrid

Share |

Arsenal, thanks to an archetypal solo effort from Thierry Henry, sealed a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in the Santiago Bernabeu - but Liverpool can not do the same as they succumbed to a late header from Benfica's Luisao.

Henry inspired Arsenal all evening and the just goal just two minutes into the second half was a stunning individual effort.

It's important to notice that the Gunners skipper picked up the ball just over the halfway line, he then shrugged off Ronaldo, Alvaro Mejia and Guti before side stepping Sergio Ramos and firing left footed low past Iker Casillas.

In fact, the victory was no more than Arsenal warranted after a terrific display in the Spanish capital as Real were far from their best.

England's Jonathan Woodgate limped off the pitch just over ten minutes in with a recurrence of a hamstring problem - and Real struggled throughout following his withdrawal.

In fact, Arsenal will now be firm favourites to book a place in the next round when they meet next month.

Arsenal to face Real Madrid: The best version of Thierry Henry needed

Arsene Wenger hopes captain Thierry Henry will turn on the style as his injury-hit Arsenal side bid to save their season at nine-times European champions Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Arsenal are five points adrift of north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the race for fourth place in the Premiership, and they know that the biggest prize in European club football is their only chance of silverware this season.

However, their hopes of taking something from the first leg of their clash with Real Madrid at the Bernabeu tonight seem to rest increasingly on talismanic hitman Henry as Wenger is deprived of whole host of stars, including Sol Campbell, Ashley Cole, Robin van Persie, Lauren and Gael Clichy.
