Henry responds to fans after match with Everton

Share |

Amazingly, Thierry Henry shrugged off barracking from his own supporters after Saturday's 1-1 draw with Everton.

We must know that after 66 minutes of watching Arsenal fighting hard to walk the ball into the net in search of an equaliser to Tim Cahill's 10th-minute strike, fans demanded a bit of old-fashioned welly.

Fans screamed 'shoot' at Henry when they got frustrated over a pass from Tomas Rosicky.

However, Thierry Henry is in no mood to compromise. He announced: "I would die like that, playing that type of football. There are no questions about that, no questions.

"I don't know if Arsenal fans are frustrated. I keep on hearing them shouting 'shoot'.

"I don't know what they're trying to say or trying to do. But I think they're getting sucked in by what some persons are saying.

"We scored some amazing goals at Reading last week and nobody said 'shoot' then. Against Everton, we created the same opportunities but the finishing wasn't what you expect. That's just the way it is.

"I know that fans are fans and like to express the way they feel. That's the way it is but as soon as we came back into the game 1-1, we went forward."

Henry also said: "Everton came with a plan, like Villa and Boro did. It seems we're going to have that all season, they play 4-4-2 everywhere and then when they come to us, it's 4-5-1. We have to deal with it. On the other side it was a lack of concentration that meant we went behind. At the end, this was a point won.

"Once more we started the match by shooting ourselves in the foot by leaving Cahill alone like that for the goal.

"I know he got a bit of luck by controlling it with his stomach and the ball falling right in front of him. But, from the start, he was alone in the box and you simply can't do that.

"Then we had a go - more than a go. But on the other side it was important to not lose the game.

"We know that Everton are just behind us and they would have been two in front if they'd won the match."

Firstly, we've been shouting "shoot" since the days of John Jensen.

Secondly, we know that Thierry, Robin & Tomas can score spectacular goals with shots, so it's natural to want to see them.

Thirdly, if the match is getting frustrating for the players, it's possibly more frustrating for the fans - who can only sit at the edge and hope.

So if we do occasionally scream "shoot", when it's going badly, that is not a merciless indictment of Thierry or his style of play. It's just an expression of our desire to score.

Thierry is reading for too much into this. We love him and the way he plays.
